Häme Nature Recreation Association
In the heart of Southern Finland, the Häme Nature Recreation Association helps people enjoy the outdoors and find well-being in nature. The association works towards making the Kanta-Häme region a great place for nature lovers and adventurers. Our purpose is to safeguard and develop recreational opportunities for both the local population and visitors to the region, and to preserve and nurture the distinctive character of the region’s nature and landscape. In practice, the association coordinates the maintenance and development of 12 regional recreational areas and the Häme Lynx Trail. The municipality in which the recreation area is located is mainly responsible for the management of the areas. Earlier we have been assisting in land acquisition, and now we are more focused on making Kanta-Häme nature areas and trails known and seen.

As a hiking destination, Komio is ideal for both experienced and novice nature lovers who want to enjoy peaceful walks in a varied landscape. Komio Nature Reserve is part of the nationally significant and diverse Maakylä-Räyskälä Natura 2000 nature reserve. The geological significance of the area is due to the clearly visible glacial formations from the last Ice Age, such as ridges, kettle hole pools and large boulders. In addition to rugged ridges, the magnificent landscape is characterised by sunny and shaded forests, small clear-water ponds and open bogs, which provide varied habitats for a diverse and valuable range of plants and animals.
Humans have had an impact on Komio’s ridge habitat for decades. The area has been slash-and-burned for crops, drained for marshland, cleared and cultivated for fields, and logged. The protection and management of the ridge habitat and its biodiversity is of particular importance due to the former intensive forest management. Today, a wide range of nature management activities take place in Komio to speed the restoration of the natural ridge forest. You can read about the nature management measures on the signs along the Pikku-Samo trail.
