Häme Nature Recreation Association
In the heart of Southern Finland, the Häme Nature Recreation Association helps people enjoy the outdoors and find well-being in nature. The association works towards making the Kanta-Häme region a great place for nature lovers and adventurers. Our purpose is to safeguard and develop recreational opportunities for both the local population and visitors to the region, and to preserve and nurture the distinctive character of the region’s nature and landscape. In practice, the association coordinates the maintenance and development of 12 regional recreational areas and the Häme Lynx Trail. The municipality in which the recreation area is located is mainly responsible for the management of the areas. Earlier we have been assisting in land acquisition, and now we are more focused on making Kanta-Häme nature areas and trails known and seen.
Kanta-Häme, located in Southern Finland, is a wonderful place for enjoying nature. The area has many different landscapes, including peaceful lakes (785 of them!), thick forests, gentle hills and history that goes way back to the Stone Age. Visitors can walk or bike on well-kept trails, relax in quiet natural spots, and camp in safe, clean sites. Kanta-Häme is a great destination for anyone who loves the outdoors.
The Häme Nature Recreation Association has been in operation since 1990. Today, the association includes all 11 municipalities in Kanta-Häme.
The municipal members are Forssa, Hämeenlinna, Riihimäki, Hattula, Hausjärvi, Humppila, Janakkala, Jokioinen, Loppi, Tammela and Ypäjä. Pälkäne and Valkeakoski are also involved in the association’s activities.

Häme Outdoor Recreation Areas
Hietasalo Recreation Area
Hietasalo is an island in the clear waters of Lake Kuohijärvi.
Enchanting forest paths in the middle of the island, cliffs to admire the sunset and peaceful campfires near the water.
Hietasalo is an island in the clear waters of Lake Kuohijärvi. You can enjoy the peace and quiet of nature without the crowds, as there are four fireplaces on the island. The nature on the island is charming and varied – forests, large rocks and an interesting bog with duckboards inside the island. The 30 m high cliff ridge overlooks a beautiful view of the lake.
During summer you can reach Hietasalo by canoe or a boat. In winter, when the ice is thick enough, the island can be accessed by ice.
Vähäniemi-Tohkoo Recreation Area
The recreational area of Vähäniemi and Tohkoo is a great place for daytrips in nature.
Walk the paths through pine forests and groves and admire the lake landscape of Häme from the landscape tower.
The clear-water lake is ideal for fishing, canoeing and swimming. The area is located on the lake Iso-Roine. The area has two headlands; Vähäniemi peninsula on the southern shore and the smaller area Tohkoo on the northern shore. Vähäniemi is a rocky forest. From the observation tower you can admire beautiful lake scenery. There is a campfire site and an outhouse at Vähäniemi, and a swimming beach at the bottom of the peninsula. For boaters, there is a natural harbour and a jetty, and at the tip of the peninsula there are buoy and hook places. An outdoor trail leads to the peninsula from the parking area. There are no services like toilets or campfires in Tohkoo, and it can be visited with everyones rights.
